Learning alphabet is the stepping stone for reading and writing. Mostly children start to show interest in learning alphabets around age of 2. Though some children learn alphabets fast, others may need more time and repetition to learn it.
Best way to get something learned is practical activities!
Here are some activities to teach alphabets in a creative and interesting way.
Alphabet – Image Matching:
Take cut outs of Alphabets and corresponding object images for each alphabet. Stick alphabets along one side and ask your child to match the corresponding image to each alphabet.
Alphabet tracing- Color sand
Fill a plate or box with color sand. Help your child to write alphabets on the sand with their fingers. So that they can feel, the letters on their finger tips. Children like to play with sand especially colored one, so it will be really a pleasure time for them.
Alphabet sorting
Take a box with separation columns, either cut the some craft paper in the alphabet shapes or else you can use stickers.Ask your child to sort each alphabet in each column.
OR
Paste some alphabet stickers on a sheet of paper. Provide some 3D alphabets to your child. Ask him to mask it on the corresponding alphabet sticker
Fish bowl Masking
Draw a fish bowl and color it as shown below. Draw some bubbles inside the bowl along with fish.
Write alphabets on each bubble and fish. Provide some stickers to your child and ask him to match and stick on the corresponding alphabet in the bowl.
Cloth pin- Matching
Mark alphabets on each cloth pin with a marker/sketch pen and keep it aside. Write any name or word on a piece of paper and ask your kid to clip respective cloth pin on each alphabet.
Masking image with magnetic letters
Provide some magnetic alphabets to your kid and place some random stickers of apple, monkey, ice cream, zebra etc. (better to select which ever they have learned previously)on a metal surface.
Ask him to place each magnetic alphabet on corresponding stickers.
Alphabet tracing with pop sticks.
In an A4 size sheet draw the outline of each alphabet. Provide some pop sticks or pom- poms to your child and ask him to trace each alphabet.
Half cut – Upper and lower case
Draw an apple on an A4 size paper. Cut it in apple shape as well as horizontally. Write uppercase letter on top half and lower case letter on the bottom half. Ask your child to join both pieces.
Repeat it for all other alphabets.
Spoon matching – Upper and lower case
Take 26 disposable spoons of large size and 26 of small size.
On the large size spoons write uppercase letters and the lower case on the small size spoons.
Ask your child to match the spoons for each alphabets.
Butterfly matching – Upper and lower case
In an A4 size construction paper draw butterfly outline as shown. Cut it’s wings, head and body separately.
Write uppercase letter on head and lowercase on body and wings. Ask your child to match it and frame the butterfly.
